What is Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation is cosmetic surgical procedure with the goal of adding volume to the breasts for a more youthful, full appearance. The additional volume comes from placing an implant behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle. The implants are filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone-gel, both of which are FDA approved devices. Dr. Edds offers both saline and silicone implants in partnership with the Mentor Corporation. Silicone-gel implants are FDA approved for cosmetic use in women over the age of 22.
These procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting under IV sedation and twilight sleep with local anesthesia. Breast augmentation is a totally pain-free procedure, which typically takes no more than an hour. The incision is less than 1 inch long and hidden in the breast crease or along the areola border. Recovery is usually no more than a few days, with return to reasonably normal activity in one week.

Your quote will include the surgeon's fee, anesthesia costs, and the facility fee for the surgery center and other supplies and implants. Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the body contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. It may also be used to correct volume loss after pregnancy or to help balance size asymmetry as well as a reconstructive technique following other breast surgery. The operation is carried out on an outpatient basis under twilight anesthesia. An implant (prothesis) may be placed through an incision around the nipple, just above the breast fold or through the belly button region. Implants may be placed either above or below the muscle of the chest wall. The procedure generally lasts about one hour.
While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, and there can be some improvement in asymmetrical breasts, some asymmetries will be improved but will not be completely corrected. A slight difference in the size or shape of the two breasts is considered normal and should not be a cause for concern. If breast size or nipple position asymmetries are severe, additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary.

The incision placement decision is determined in the consultation with Dr. Edds and is based on your anatomy, your desired outcome and the size and shape of the breast implants. At the Aesthetic Surgery Center, we offer inframammary breast augmentation (just above the breast crease), peri-areolar breast augmentation (edge of the nipple incision), and the transumbilical incision (incision within the hood of the belly button). The advantages and disadvantages of these incisions and each patient's case will be fully discussed during the consultation.
