Neck Lift
Time and exposure to the elements, like the sun's rays, causes many patients to turn to a neck lift in Owensboro to correct aging on the neck and lower face. When performed by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gerald Edds, a neck lift is able to tighten loose skin on the neck. This undesirable effect of aging can produce what may be referred to as a "turkey neck." Though some cosmetics may claim to tone this skin, the only way to provide long-lasting correction is with a neck lift.
Who Can Benefit from a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is ideal for patients, both men and women, who have begun to see the effects of age on their lower face and neck. As your skin ages, it begins to lose its youthful elasticity and tone, causing it to droop and sag. As time passes, this condition only gets worse. Because of this, Dr. Edds often prefers to perform a neck lift before the sagging skin has become excessive. The benefits of a neck lift include:
- a more toned-looking neck
- minimized visible neck bands
- improved self-esteem
- apparent age can be reduced
When you meet with Dr. Edds for your consultation, he will ask you about your cosmetic goals. Based on his assessment, Dr. Edds will be able to explain how he will perform your neck lift. Since all patients' needs vary, Dr. Edds performs cosmetic surgeries that are unique to each patient.
What Is the Procedure Like?
Your neck lift will be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will not require an overnight stay in the hospital. For the procedure, a general anesthetic will likely be used. This will help you to sleep through the surgery and improve your comfort.
To begin your neck lift, Dr. Edds will make an incision from the front of your earlobes, around to and along your hairline, similar to a face lift. From this vantage point, Dr. Edds is able to see the muscles of the neck. He will then mold and suture the neck bands, helping them to be less visible.
If you struggle with the appearance of a double chin, Dr. Edds can correct this during your neck lift. He will make a small incision under your chin where it will be minimally visible. From here, he will use a thin tube called a cannula and perform liposuction to remove the small pockets of fat.
Once Dr. Edds has achieved optimal neck toning, he will close the incisions with sutures and apply a surgical dressing. You may also wear a compression garment for some time after surgery to maintain the trimmer shape of your neck.
What Recovery Steps Will I Take?
When you wake from the anesthetic after surgery, you may feel groggy. Because of this, you will need to arrange for transportation home. You should also make sure to have help around the home for several days.
If you experience any discomfort, Dr. Edds will prescribe medication to help you manage it. Swelling is possible during this time. Limiting your movement and applying ice packs can help control swelling as you heal.
Though you will be expected to walk shortly after surgery, Dr. Edds will ask you to resume your normal activities with caution. You should be able to walk comfortably several days after surgery, but it may be several weeks before you can get back to your exercise routine. Most patients are able to return to work after two weeks or so, but may choose to wear scarves or turtlenecks to conceal their necks as they complete healing.
